I met this little owl while hiking near Ridgeway, Colorado, beneath the San Juan Mountains.
He was tucked into the trees, almost disappearing into the winter landscape. I managed to take a photography before continuing down the trail, and later brought the moment home to paint.
Northern Saw-whet Owls are tiny, only about 7-8 inches tall, and are among the smallest owls in North America. They're nocturnal and famously elusive, spending their days quietly roosting in dense trees.
There was something about this particular encounter that stayed with me: the stillness of the snow, the mountains, and this impossibly small owl keeping watch from the trees.
